Dimapur, November 6 (MExN): Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) Neuro rehabilitation team organised World Stroke Day on October 29 to spread awareness and highlight services available for patients seeking stroke medical care and rehabilitation. 

A press release from MD PM&R, CIHSR, Dr Toshimenla Pongener stated that opening note and unveiling of the stroke clinic brochure was done by Dr Bendang Medical superintendent of CIHSR. CIHSR is the first hospital in Nagaland having a multidisciplinary team to cater to the needs of stroke patient.

Dr Mego MD (Medicine) emphasised on identifying stroke and prevention. He explained that Stroke is syndrome that occurs when there is problem of blood supply to the brain, oxygen and nutrients to is cut off leading to brain cells get damaged.

Dr Chenithung MD (PM&R) spoke on ICF model of stroke & components community based rehabilitation like health, education, social acceptance, livelihood & empowerment. Theyiesinuo emphasized on role of nurses in stroke care & their role in bringing the team together at community level & hospital enabling the patient and care giver for long term care. 

Kiyekali V Awomi (MPT) explained how physiotherapy can help after stroke. Ashish Kindo (MOT) explained regarding role of Occupational therapy in improving activities of daily living after stroke. Keneitsolou Koza (SLP) spoke on how SLP can Reduce the effects of stroke-related communication problem and Imlibenla Mongro, Clinical Psychologist emphasised on stroke-related cognitive and behaviour changes and care giver stress. Panel discussion was centered on the challenges faced by the patient and care givers.

World Stroke Day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about stroke & their impact on individuals & community. It is observed every year on October 29 with various theme which helps in unifying global awareness campaign. This year’s theme was “Greater than stroke active challenge” which harnesses the inspiring impact of sports to drive awareness about stroke prevention and rehabilitation.
