As part of commemoration of the World Hepatitis Day, Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) Dimapur, conducted a mass free Hepatitis B & C screening camp along with free screening of HIV, blood pressure and blood sugar, at Badminton stadium, Medziphema town.
At brief programme held before the start of the screening camp, director CIHSR, Dr. Sedevi Angami, gave an overview of Hepatitis, the “silent killer” which, according to World Health Organization (WHO), accounts for an estimated 600,000 death each year worldwide. Dr. Sedevi explained to the villagers and patients on the causes, detection and preventive measures with regard to hepatitis. The institute’s former director, Dr. Joseph Abraham, also highlighted on diabetes and hypertension and their growing prevalence in modern society. Volunteers from Medziphema also assisted the CIHSR in smooth conduct of the camp.
President of Medziphema Town Public Organization, Akhoto Kuotsu, and an elder GB of Medziphema, in their speeches thanked CIHSR for the concern shown to public and villagers of Medziphema and surrounding areas by conducting the screening camp. Akhoto also mentioned that CIHSR had earlier in 2015 conducted a survey on paragonianisis (lung fluke) in Medziphema.
Doctors, nurses, health workers and trainees from CIHSR led by Dr. Atsung Aier, senior consultant and head of Community Medicine Department and Dr. Rohan Ramesh, consultant (Community Medicine) conducted a systematic and thorough screening of the registered patients, which included checking of height and weight, body mass index, blood pressure, blood testing, counseling and information centre.
CIHSR sources said of the 205 people who attended the screening camp, 21 had high blood sugar levels, 2 each Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C positive cases were detected and these cases have being referred to for further evaluation.
