I am a novice in politics and possess no credentials to advice or give suggestions to anybody. What I wish to say here, therefore, is simply a citizen’s opinion and humble appeal on one issue only.
At a time when peace and solution talks are at a frenzy and several critical issues are being discussed for decisions to be taken upon, it is not surprising for plenty of news to be floating, some factual and some rumours. Among them, there is the news that Eastern Nagas may be carved out to form a separate entity. If carving out refers to some special socio-economic packages, such proposals will, I am sure, find full support and acceptance from all quarters. However, if it means dividing the geographical territory of present Nagaland, then it is, in my opinion, a huge cause for sadness and concern.
We acknowledge that if our eastern brethren wish to break away, there must be credible reasons for it and we respect them. But let us ponder over this – after decades of talks and negotiations we wake up to a post-solution era and suddenly find ourselves much reduced and divided. Somehow, that strikes as simply not right and certainly no reason to celebrate. As it is we are very small and any further division will only make us that much more insignificant on all fronts.
The humble appeal is to all the leaders (and the people as well) on all sides not to tire but continue to use their wisdom of judgement and power of persuasion to ensure that we remain together in the interest of our common future. Appeals are often too easily made, and yet the future of a people demands it.
On the wider and deeper issue involving all Nagas everywhere, the tireless efforts of all concerned, individuals and groups, who are working for a peaceful political solution is respectfully acknowledged. Let me simply say this that the Government of India represents the people of India with her tried and tested tradition of democracy and freedom, and that is why, in as much as it is the pride of the Nagas, it really also is to the pride of India, for the Nagas to live with dignity and in the security and opportunities of an honourable settlement.
I have very briefly expressed my thoughts at the risk of being ridiculed as ignorant, even foolish, but I take comfort and courage in the fact that many share this opinion, and I dare say that still much more feel the same.
