NUTA’s barrage of accusations at the outgoing Vice Chancellor (VC) of Nagaland University (NU) which had been published in some local dailies on the 3rd of August 2011 has been unbefitting to them. The use of some terms in the write up are extremely derogatory as well as shameful and had surprised many readers including myself. Any sensible person with the right mind would think twice about the use of some of the terms that NUTA used. As citizens, we expect courtesy and civility from NUTA.
As a concerned citizen I have nothing against the VC nor NUTA. However, upon reading the write-up I cannot help but wonder what kind of education is NUTA providing to our Naga children if they have no decency in framing language for public consumption. All sane people may be unable to monitor their verbal outbursts but any written document is often reread to make a good impression. And during the recent times, the degeneration of refined thoughts and arguments have worsened with NUTA. The latest outburst on Post Mortem page, Nagaland Post, Aug 03, 2011 and Morung Express Front page, Aug 03, 2011 is shameful not only to teaching fraternity but for civilized reading.
I am sure that many readers like myself will be shocked by the use of many of the words but for me most of all, by the use of certain terms like “sucked up to him” and accusing that Kannan played “extensive communal politics, pitting one tribe against the other” is an insult to the intellect of the Naga students and Teachers in NU. How can a man like Kannan with only 5 years work in NU swerve Nagas as imagined by NUTA? Either NUTA is telling lies or NU students and teachers are not intelligent enough. I for one would like to agree with the former than later. I cannot help myself from worrying about the quality of education that would be imparted to young Nagas by people who think that way. The use of this kind of language only damages the writer more than the one written about.
The NU agitations have been going on since NU was established. People like myself are weary of the viciousness and lack of decency in the attacks of NUTA on any VC or any one who pass their paths. When one reads the press releases of NUTA, one tends to conclude that there is more of “Burmese Junta style” in NUTA and that perhaps NUTA is “egoist with huge complexes” than some one else NUTA may be keen to blame. NUTA has been in the news for all the wrong reasons all these years. We have come to the point where we do not want to hear anymore. NUTA’s negativism is destroying NU not some one else, although NUTA would be delighted at that prospect. It is not hearty for NUTA to call Kannan “ the great dictator” as no dictator is great, although NUTA may indulge so. The only concern for us is the loss of precious learning time for many of our children who cannot afford to go out to pursue their studies except to learn from NU. But with such vicious faculty, one does get concern with the output.
The frustrated ranting unfortunately is also extremely very childish and does not suit the caliber of academicians. Politicians, bureaucrats, civil society, police and even their own fraternity were viciously attacked by NUTA. Maybe NUTA needs to humbly learn that there are always 2 different perspectives in life. I do not believe that any “politician.., bureaucrat.., leaders and guardians of society” or Police have been taken for a ride. Rather, our society could have been taken for a ride by NUTA. If investigations are open for how many hours NUTA leaders teach in classrooms, how many scholarly articles have been published by them, how well they know their academic subjects and so on, God forbid, but chances are pretty high that the NU students and Naga people have been taken for a ride by NUTA!
I hope NUTA have a new beginning with the new VC and not let their old ranting reign in NU. There is no time to waste and lose for NU anymore. Although NUTA has been championing rift and discord with every VC of NU thus far, one wishes that sobriety and sanity prevails in NU. Hopefully, NUTA does not take their conflict out to the other members of the Naga society as was wildly alleged in their press release of Aug 03, 2011. We already have enough and we do not need NUTA’s exasperation.
