500 tree saplings planted in Jakhama
Kohima, June 15 (MExN): In view of its forthcoming Golden Jubilee celebration, Jakhama Students’ Union (JSU) organised a tree plantation drive on June 11 with an objective to promote and protect environment in and around the village and also to keep the village clean and green. JSU together with the village council, youth society, women society, sanitation committee, churches and Jakhama Union Kohima (JUK) planted 500 tree saplings with proper fencing.
While planting a tree sapling, Kevipodi Sophie, Project Director, RD Kohima stressed on the importance of protecting and conserving the natural resources, including air, water, and forests in order to maintain the overall health of the environment, a press release from JSU stated. All of these resources, he said, are at risk and pointed out the shortage of water and the change in weather.
Convenor of JSU Golden Jubilee Committee, Zavishio Khieya pointed to the failure on our part to replace the cut or cleared trees of the forests. He stated that in order to fight the menace of global warming, vigorous efforts should be made such as discouraging activities, development or businesses which cause damages to environment. Trees, he added, should be planted everywhere in and around the village.
Environment activist and Co-Convenor of JSU Golden Jubilee Committee, Kezhokhoto Savi commented that by protecting rivers and their related ecosystems as well as searching for new sources of water, even in the form of preserving trees in the jungles and rocks in the rivers, we can assure ourselves of a substantial supply of the crucial substance in the future while still protecting important fish and wildlife habitat.
Savi maintained that natural disasters like landslide, soil erosion, and floods, and short supply of water are happening in the village due to cruelty of human beings. “We are not doing our duty. We are not taking care of God’s beautiful creation. Why (are we) destroying our beautiful environment?” he questioned.
He appealed for collective effort to protect the trees, especially the ones on Dzukou road, jungles, mountains and the rocks that surround the village and to the rivers.
