The Nagaland Users’ Network (NUN) inaugurated CITY BARN Wokha, ‘The Health Centre’ at Wokha Town on August 17.
Vineet Kumar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, was the chief guest for the event, which was attended by representatives from various departments including Social Welfare, ART, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Mental Health District Hospital, Eloe Hoho, NUN-LWS Wokha, NUN-TI Wokha, DAPCU Wokha, and local church members.
In his address, Kumar highlighted the pressing issue of high drug usage and substance abuse in Wokha district. He expressed hope that the new centre would play a crucial role in rehabilitating youths involved in drug use and encourage a turnaround in their lives. He called for the centre to be actively promoted and used as a resource for understanding and supporting individuals grappling with substance abuse. Kumar also requested that success stories be collected to inspire others to overcome drug addiction. He emphasised the interconnectedness of drugs, AIDS, and crime, and urged a collective societal effort to tackle these issues.
Lichumo Odyuo, DPO of DAPCU Wokha, provided a welcome note, noting that the district has 325 registered individuals receiving HIV Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).
Kevizale-e Kera, centre coordinator for NUN CITY BARN Wokha, outlined the services to be offered, including counselling and screening for HIV and TB for youths under 24. The centre aims to be a youth-friendly drop-in facility, focusing on identifying and supporting those engaged in risky behaviours.
Kevinguto Khamo, project director of NUN, concluded the event with a vote of thanks. He reminded attendees that NUN is the first state-level Drug Users’ Network in the country, established on 26 May 1999. NUN's mission is to improve the quality of life for drug users and people living with HIV through advocacy, policy development, and effective programme implementation.
