The Classic Club Kohima today announced that it will have a yearlong celebration this year to mark the attainment of 20 glorious years. Briefing media persons here at 2K Hotel this evening, Classic Club president K. Neibu Sekhose stated that various social service activities apart from 20th edition of the Classic Cup 2014 will mark the yearlong celebration. In this, he sought cooperation and support from one and all towards the success of the eventful year.
Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker, Chotisush Sazo, who is member of the Club was also present at the briefing and highlighted the activities of the club during the last 20 years. He said that the club has constructed traditional gate at junction to DC office Kohima, is maintaining Chaii Park near BSNL office, constructed resting shed near Dzuza River along National Highway, Classic Island, and also constructed Nagaland Bharat Scouts & Guides HQ gate. It also conducted medical camps at Phusachodu and Viphoma village with the theme “Health for all.”
On every National Days like Independence Day and Republic Day, the Club also visits hospitals, jails, orphanage home etc. and provide food items. It has set up Orphanage Library at Kohima Destitute and Orphanage Home for the inmates under its educational programme. A marketing shed for Kohima Orphanage Home was also constructed by them. The club also sponsors few underprivileged students. It has also adopted one child from the day of the birth and still sponsoring it.
The club also undertook exposure trip to India and South East Asia. Other activities included; Inter School Group Dance Competition, musical concert, peace run and also participated at the Kaziranga Reserved Forest Centenary Rally. Sazo said the Club also instituted Classic Award in 1991 in recognition of individuals and organizations excelling in the field of sports, social service, education, health service and humanitarian works etc.
The recipients of the Classic Award till date included; Methaneilie Jiitakhrie for “Save a Life Concert,” Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu for outstanding contribution in Tenyidie, Dr. Joyce Z. Zinyii for active involvement in spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS, Late Dr. T. Ao (Posthumously) awarded for excellent record in the field of sports, Geoffrey Yaden for immense contribution towards print media and social services, Neichielieii Nikki Haralu for being the Ist Naga to hold the post of ambassador and also for outstanding contribution towards the society, Kughaho Chishi for his contribution towards art & music, Nancy Kikon for her creativity and practical effort in enhancing the economic status of Naga women, Rev. Dr. Fr. Godfrey Vilasal Thapo for his contribution in the field of medicine and health care through his holistic health healing centre, Chekrovolii Swuro for outstanding achievements in the field of archery and the latest is Major Neikhrietuonuo Linyii for being the first Naga to have scaled Mt. Everest.
The Club also undertook trekking to Dziikou valley and Japfii Mountain in order to create awareness about the importance of flora and fauna and also to create and conserve environment.
Further, it also extends help to the victims of natural calamity.
Meanwhile, the Classic Club today announced that the prize money of the Classic Cup has been enhanced to Rs. 1, 50,000 for champion and Rs. 70,000 for runners-up which will come into force from 20th edition this year, starting from August 18 to September 6.
It may be mentioned that the Classic Club was formed in 1994 with the motto “Aiming higher.”
