CLEAN CHIZAMI VISION: Chizami village joins ‘World Cleanup Day’

Phek, September 19 (MExN): Four hundred people comprising of children, students, youths and elders from Chizami village under Phek district today joined the global movement ‘World Cleanup Day’ along with millions of volunteers across 180 countries to clean up the world in one day for a clean and healthy waste-free planet.

The event was organized by Chizami Students’ Union (CSU) in partnership with Chizami Youth Society (CYS) covering the village approach road and footsteps stretching about 2.5 kilometers.

As part of the process, the segregation, branding and auditing of waste undertaken by the volunteers. In each khel, segregation sites were identified a day prior to the event.

During the cleanup day, 250 kg of waste was collected including glass, metal, textiles, pet bottles etc and the top waste pollutants found includes pet bottles, multi-layered plastics and single use plastics and tetrapeks.

The top 5 company polluters were Som Global Pan Masala Pvt Limited., Kaventers Agro Limited, Asian Thai foods India Pvt Limited, Ahinsa Pure Water Assam and Deepak Vegpro (P) Limited.

CSU, General Secretary, Khrolhiweu Tsuhah (Awi) informed that this movement was also organized in line with Clean Chizami Vision, to empower young generation of leaders to create a waste-free Chizami by working locally and collaborating globally as a commitment to Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

World Cleanup Day was initiated in 2008 in Northern European country of Estonia as a localized initiative and has become a global bottom-up civic movement and the initiative is the biggest one-day civic action against waste in human history.

It aims to move towards better waste management, raise awareness on the issue and the urgency to tackle it and to find sustainable solutions for a cleaner future and to combat climate change.
