AGAINST THE flare-up between the Yimchunger and the Tikhir at Shamator, arising out of the proposed Yimchunger Students’ Union conference, a meeting was today convened in Kohima where Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his cabinet colleagues participated in detailed discussions, Nagaland Commissioner TN Mannen informed.
Mannen told The Morung Express that the situation at Shamator is “apparently under control” and that the government had taken prompt action by dispatching the DC and SP of Tuensang to the spot of trouble immediately. The Commissioner has also assigned DIG of Police, C Kikon, and the DC from his office, Chilangsü, to Shamator.
A point of substance to be taken gravely is that armed Village Guards should, by all means, not involve themselves, Mannen said, and added that all civilian arms should be surrendered till the situation tides over. The IRB and the special NAP are already posted in the area to control the state of affairs, especially when “emotions are running high.” It was also informed that the Chief Minister has summoned the MLAs from the area for a meeting.
Reports from Shamator, however, say a number of residents from Shamator Town today through force chased out members of Shamator Village. The villagers have fled to nearby forests where they are taking refuge, sources said. Armed opposing parties are also reported to be on the “hunt” for each other. Requests made by residents of Shamator include necessary ‘interference’ from concerned authorities, and sensitivity to the issue from the media to keep the condition from deteriorating.
