CM directs immediate road and bridge repairs

Says 19 people died and 5 persons remain missing in flood related incidents

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 2 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang today visited flood affected areas at Naharbari, United Colony and Ekhyo-yan in Dimapur and inspected damaged bridges at 4th mile and Nagarjan along with the legislators of Dimapur District.

After visiting the flood affected areas, the CMO disclosed that 19 people have lost their lives in the recent flood related incidents and 5 persons remain missing.

According to a press note from the CMO, Zeliang said that the State Government is yet to receive detailed reports of the damaged cause by the flood and estimates of exact requirement to tackle the natural disaster.

He informed that the Nagaland State Government had submitted an approximate requirement of Rs 700 Crore to the Prime Minister during their meeting in Guwahati on August 1 to manage and repair the damages caused by the deluge.

While stating that the first task of the government was to provide relief, the CM said that their second task is to repair the damaged bridges, deplorable roads and initiate flood control works in Dimapur Town.

The CM said he has instructed the concerned department to construct suspension bridges urgently alongside the damaged bridges, which would be soon followed by construction of sub-way, as the construction of bridges are likely to take time.

With regard to the 4th mile bridge, Zeliang directed for immediate construction of suspension bridge for the convenience of the public and a Bailey bridge to be completed within 2 months. He also asked R&B officials to initiate for taking up the construction of the main bridge without delay.

The proposed roads to be repaired immediately include Pudamphukuri-Duncan road via Khermahal, 3rd Mile-Nagarjan Road and Sovima-Rangaphar road, the CM informed.

He meanwhile expressed regret that construction of the two damaged bridges could not be carried out in time though the work order was issued last year and the sanction was accorded under CRF by the Centre.

“It is because of the lack coordination and communication among the concerned department and agencies, which has caused inconvenience to the people”, he added, while urging the contractors to start the construction of two damaged bridges without further delay.

The CM said he has also instructed the Urban Development and Irrigation and Flood Control department to immediately initiate survey works and bring out detailed report for controlling the flood in Dimapur.

Embankment work will be carried out by I&FC and drainage construction will be carry out by Urban Development Department, the CM informed.
