Collaborated effort needed to achieve SDGs

Seminar on SDG 16 at Tseminyu 

Tseminyu, October 29 (MExN): Under the ‘Leave no one behind’ project, the National Foundation for India organized a seminar on the Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institution with the youth leaders and members at Tseminyu town on October 28.

The objective of the seminar was to significantly reduce all forms of violence and work with governments and communities to end conflict and insecurity aiming towards peace, justice and strong institution as enshrined in the SDG Goal 2030, stated a press release from Program Manager for ARK Foundation on Friday.

As per the release, resource person Kezhosano Kikhi, State Coordinator, NSLSA, who presented an overview of SDGs, deliberated on the importance of the community involvement and collaborated efforts towards achieving the goals. She elaborated on the various sub goals within Goal 16 which talks about reduction of violence, ending abuse, exploitation and trafficking, promoting the rule of the law, combating against organized crimes, reduction in corruption, strengthen institution and maintain transparency, incorporate represented decision making processes, legal identity for all, and ensure public access to information’s and protect fundamental freedoms of all citizens.

In specified reference to the Nagaland SDG Goal 16, Kikhi stated that the goal set to be achieved by 2030 in Nagaland, features reducing the proportion of crime against women against total crime reported to 2 %, reducing proportion of crime against children to 0.16 % per 1,00,000 population, reducing the number of murder cases significantly, and reduction in cases of corruption.

Kikhi also highlighted the interventions made under Goal 16 such as awareness on rule of law among students through ‘Police Ke Pathshala,’ establishment of cyber crime cell in an effort to contain cyber crimes against women and children,  and introduction of 33% reservation for women in the police force and full-fledged women police stations in all the districts.

Kikhi also said that in order to promote rule of law and equal access to justice for all, DLSAs have established free legal aid, Legal Literacy Clubs in schools and Legal Aid Clinics, Lok Adalats and also conducted several awareness programmes, the release stated.

Ketho Angami, President, ARK Foundation, emphasized on the concept of ‘Youth and Health,’ in relevance to goal no 3 and 16. He stated that without good health, peace and justice cannot be achieved nor maintained. As such, he said that  in the present context, there is total disharmony and inequality due to people indulging in substance use and prevalance of blood borne infectious disease. 

Stating that peace, justice and strong institutions can only be enjoyed if people have a sound health, Angami emphasized on the importance of community participation and shared responsibility. Youth leaders and upcoming leaders should be empowered with knowledge in order to lead the community towards achieving the SDG Goals, he concluded.
