Mizoram Chief Minister and Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga on Wednesday expressed happiness over Rajya Sabha being adjourned sine die without tabling the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

“It is a matter of joy that the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die without the Citizenship Amendment Bill being tabled. It appears that the Bill will not be passed in the tenure of the present government at the Centre. It is quite a relief,” Zoramthanga said. He attributed the results to the collective efforts of the people of Northeast, civil societies and political parties in opposing the Bill.

Zoramthanga also thanked Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee, an umbrella body of major civil societies and student bodies, which spearheaded the agitation against the Bill. Citing that all political parties in the state are in one accord against the Bill, the Chief Minister claimed that his government had strongly opposed the Bill since the very beginning. He added that he had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the Bill and informed them that the Bill had been strongly opposed by the people of Northeast.

Zoramthanga also claimed that his government had taken massive efforts to ensure the defeat of the Bill in Rajya Sabha. He added that he recently took part at the Northeast regional party meeting in Guwahati where leaders of 11 political parties resolved to oppose the Bill till the end Soon after the adjournment of Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Zoramthanga said he was communicated over phone by Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K Sangma, who told him that the development was the results of the unity of the Northeast people as a whole.

Zoramthanga also urged the people, NGOs, churches and political parties to join hands and stand united in case there is a bid to re-introduce the Bill in future. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Wednesday without taking up the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
