College student in Kohima commits suicide

DBC clarifies suicide not related to affairs of college as alleged

In a tragic incident, a college student in Kohima reportedly died by suicide on November 13. The deceased was an undergraduate student studying in Don Bosco College, Kohima. Police sources while confirming the incident said the deceased was found hanging inside an under-construction building not far from the house he resided.  

A police team visited the site where the incident occurred. The incident may have occurred around 3 pm, the police source said. No FIR has been lodged in this connection and on family request; no post mortem was carried out, the police source further informed. 

In the aftermath of the unfortunate incident, a social media post alleging that the deceased committed suicide purportedly because of ‘fines’ imposed by the college were widely circulated. Police, in this regard said such speculation cannot be established as the exact cause cannot be ascertained without any evidence adding that the person/s responsible for circulating the message on social media are only making 'assumption' of the same.

The concerned college authority in this regard also issued clarification over the claim. Dean of Student Welfare and the Students' Forum of Don Bosco College, Kohima in a clarification maintained, "Don Bosco College, Kohima does not impose fines as alleged in the text message that has been circulating; the college as a motivational measure requires reimbursable caution deposits with full understanding and knowledge of the parents and prior information to the students.”

For further clarification, the Dean said the college received a text message from the sister of the deceased student with whom he was staying. The family of the deceased also made clear statement that the incident is not related to the affairs of the college. At this time of grief, the family also expressed deep resentment towards the fake social media posts and further requests not to aggravate the situation, the clarification further stated. 

The authority also added that any individual or group found circulating information containing false statements, rumours without proper knowledge and defaming the institution will be held accountable for legal action.
