Community action stressed at Dimapur World Malaria Day event

Dimapur, April 28 (MExN): World Malaria Day 2026 was observed at the Chief Medical Officer’s Conference Hall in Dimapur on April 24 under the theme, “Drive to end Malaria; Now we can; Now we must.”

The programme highlighted the need for stronger community participation, early detection and sustained action to eliminate malaria.

Spekaing on the occasion, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur, Dr Kheshika Yeptho said malaria cannot be eradicated by the department alone and called for collective responsibility in the fight against the disease. 

He stated that every individual must work together with the community and the health department to support malaria elimination efforts.

Delivering the keynote address, District VDB Consultant Heanglih T Konyak said World Malaria Day is observed annually to raise awareness and renew commitment against one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases.

She noted that despite significant progress, malaria continues to claim lives and remains a public health, social and economic burden globally. Referring to this year’s theme, she said the campaign underscores the need for sustainable and innovative investments, along with strong community participation.

She highlighted three priority areas: raising awareness and community participation, strengthening surveillance and early detection, and taking collective responsibility to eliminate malaria.

Konyak also appreciated the contributions of the health department, allied agencies and malaria staff, whose efforts have helped reduce malaria cases in the district. She urged citizens to take personal responsibility in supporting the elimination drive.

The programme was chaired by District Programme Officer, CD-I Dimapur, Dr Ayangla Saku, Dr Ayangla Saku, while Assistant Director, UVBDS Dimapur, Kikolul Khriya spoke on the significance of the day.
