Community participation crucial to conserve forests

Wokha celebrates World Environment Day


WOKHA, JUNE 5 (MExN): Wokha district celebrated World Environment day at the DC’s Public Park on June 5. The celebration was organized by the Wokha Forest Division and Doyang Plantation Division.


Deputy Commissioner, Wokha,OrenthungLotha while speaking on the occasion, said it is very encouraging to see young people taking active part and participating during such events and urged them to be the agents of change in spreading awareness in preserving and conserving the environment.


He also added, it is not only the domain of the Forest Department alone in preserving our forest but it is the responsibility of everyone and called for community participation in preserving the forests. Due to the depletion of environment even animals are coming closer to human habitation, he said, adding that it is time for people to give utmost care in preserving the environment for the betterment of future generations.


Superintended of Police, Wokha, Imtitoshi said forestshere are very rich with many varieties of plants and vegetation which are not found in other parts of the country.He however lamented that many of these plants are disappearing rapidly due to deforestation and called for community participation in conservation efforts. 


The function was chaired by RFO Baghty Range, LansothungLotha, while DFO Doyang, Chisayi, IFS delivered the key note address. The programme ended with planting of trees at the DC’s public park.
