Community Seed Bank launched in Chizami

Chizami, February 9 (MExN): A Community Seed Bank, initiated by the Chizami Women Society with the support of North East Network (NEN), was launched at Chizami village on February 9.  

Inaugurating the Seed Bank, Head GB Lhikhalo Akami lauded the noble initiative of the Chizami Women Society and blessed the effort. Speaking on the importance of Community Seed Bank, Programme Manager at NEN Nagaland, Wekoweu Tsuhah articulated that “this humble yet significant initiative of the Women Society will go a long way in safeguarding the genetic diversity and traditional knowledge of community. It also will ensure food, nutritional and ecological securities. This will further strengthen community cohesion.”  

She encouraged the community people to support and participate in this initiative in order to realize the true meaning of a Community Seed Bank.  

The function was attended by SDO (Civil) Chizami, Village Council members, GB, Youth Society, Students Union, NEN representatives, well wishers from Kohima and members of the Chizami Women Society.  

A press release stated here that earlier in the morning, a Weekly Bazaar, initiated by the Chizami Women Society was inaugurated by SDO (Civil) Renbomo Ezung at Chizami Town. The programme was attended by community leaders and from producer-vendors from Chizami Town, Chizami, Enhulumi, Thetsumi, Khomi, and Sakraba.
