Dimapur, June 2 (MExN): Identifying the urgent need for the children in need of care and protection against being exploited, Community Educational Centre Society (CECS), Dimapur will be organising a concert against child labour on June 12. The concert will mark the culmination of the campaign against child labour in Nagaland initiated by CECS Project Director, Subonenba Longkumer. The programme is being organized in partnership with Peace Channel, NMDW, and Sinai Ministry and supported by the Department of Labour.
Voice for a ‘child labour free state’
A press release issued by CECS stated that, during the campaign, CECS aimed to raise 5000 youths as volunteers in Dimapur from different schools, higher secondary schools and colleges. So far it has garnered about 3000 volunteers. In the campaign against child labour, Longkumer highlighted to students the hardship and difficulties faced by the child labour, child domestic workers and under privileged children. He also highlighted that the children are being deprived of parental love and care, rest and leisure that are required for their healthy mental and physical development.
The release further stated that the objectives in raising volunteers from among the student group, is to create awareness on the importance of the rights of children, and also the negative impact it is having on the society. CECS challenges the students to raise their voices against child labour, abuse discrimination of children, so that in next 10 to 15 years Nagaland will be a ‘child labour free state.’
The volunteers are also encouraged to make use of the facility of ‘CHILDLINE 1098’ by informing team members about children who are being abused; children in need of medical assistance, and children and orphans in need of care and protection. CHILDLINE Dimapur (1098) is a project under the Ministry of Women and Child Development that provides 24 hours emergency phone and outreach service for children in need of care and protection that aims to link children to long term services.
CECS is a pioneer non-government organization working for children, puts their main focus on child labour, child rights, child in need of care and protection, juvenile in conflict with law, under privileged children and their rehabilitation in the society. CECS have been campaigning for the rights of children for several years, and is committed to work for children. It raised 1000 volunteers in 2010 from schools, higher secondary schools and colleges in Dimapur, who let a silent march from Old NST junction area to IMC, Dimapur on June 12, 2010, along with the rest of the world to commemorate the ‘World Day Against Child Labour’.
