Cong urges ‘corrective measures’ in NREGA

Dimapur, September 17 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee today urged “the authorities” to take ‘corrective measures’ in the implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). The clarion of the NPCC comes in the wake of the prime minister urging all the states to strengthen implementation of the rural employment scheme.

“There have been complaints and resentment from various quarters about the gross misuse of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act by the state government, which was introduced by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for the welfare of common people,” stated a note from NPCC chief KV Pusa.  The purpose of serving the poor and needy people has been defeated by the misuse of the scheme for ‘partisan purpose’ by the state government, it alleged. The NPCC took strong exception that “in many constituencies this scheme is not being either implemented or has gone into the pockets of some few individuals.”

The Congress said it will not remain “mute spectator if pro-people scheme like NREGA is misused by people in power for their personal benefit and partisan purpose.” If it is not rectified at the earliest, the party would have no option but to seek ‘justice,’ the NPCC cautioned.

“The Congress party wants the authorities to take  cognizance of the voice of the Naga people and treat the matter seriously and take all corrective measures, so that the NREGA reaches the targeted citizens of the state.” If it is not “checked at the earliest” and allowed to continue in the present situation, the NPCC stated, the people as well as the Congress “will not tolerate misuse of what is legitimately belong to the people.” The NPCC is hoping that “the government of the day” will treat the matter with utmost seriousness.
