Congress, peace center joyous at reconciliation pact

 ‘Whole’ NNC urged to join

Dimapur, June 19 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and Nagaland Peace Center joins the Nagas in jubilating at the commitment made towards reconciliation by the Naga underground groups in Ching Mei in Thailand recently.

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee has heartily welcomed the historic ‘Covenant of Reconciliation’ jointly signed by the leaders of the NSCN (IM), the GPRN/NSCN and the FGN (‘non-accordist’). “Indeed this will be a fulfillment of the long aspiration of the Naga people for a unified approach towards realizing our common goal. The Forum for Naga Reconciliation deserves not only congratulations but our utmost support for strengthening the ongoing process of reconciliation and forgiveness with all other Naga groups” the NPCC stated in a message from its vice president.

The Congress said the “solemn commitment made before God to reconcile and forgive” and “to continue to work together in this spirit of love, non violence, peace and respect to resolve outstanding issues amongst us” may become a dream come true “to the erstwhile divided Nagas”.

According to the NPCC, the “basic principle” to ‘reconcile first amongst ourselves and collectively negotiate for a solution’ has persistently been the most ardent political agenda of the NPCC. As a matter of fact since ceasefire was brought about in 1997 and 2001 both during the time of the Congress, this principle is now “duly recognized and adopted by the factions.” It is indeed a big leap taken “drawing us closer to our common purpose” the NPCC said and called for active participation of every section of the Naga community “before any final touch is given.”

“While fully supporting the Covenant of Reconciliation, the NPCC appeals the NNC as a whole, including the FGN (accordist) to also endorse upon what the people have now largely appreciated it as a major breakthrough in the process of reconciliation” it added.

Nagaland Peace Centre welcomes

Similarly, the Nagaland Peace Centre of Kohima welcomed the commitment and said the development has provided a new direction ‘through reconciliation and forgiveness’.

“This is a positive move which indicate that political approach is needed along with the support of all sections of the people so as to work together and find out a political solution to the vexed Naga problem. An action committed needs to be set up comprising of all sensible and honest leaders to honor, oversee and observance of the said joint agreement,” the center state din a message from its executives.

The Nagaland Peace Centre also acknowledged the selfless service and efforts of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation led by Rev. Dr. Wati Aier and all those who spearheaded the reconciliation process of the Naga “political” groups. The centre has urged all the Naga underground workers to “forgive the past mistakes and start a new beginning with the spirit of unity, peace and understanding”.
