KOHIMA, JUNE 18 (MExN): Subsequent to one of its candidates withdrawing from the Urban Local Bodies elections, a fuming Congress trained its gun on the BJP. The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), on June 18, filed a complaint against BJP MLA and Advisor for Tribal Affairs and Elections, H Tovihoto Ayemi holding the MLA accountable for the withdrawal of the Congress candidate, Kanili Kinilimi from the electoral race from the Dimapur Municipal Council’s reserved Ward-7.
In its complaint to the State Election Commissioner (SEC), the NPCC charged Ayemi of inducing Kinilimi into withdrawing her candidature “with the promise of offering a Nominated seat to the Dimapur Municipal Council.”
It said that Ayemi’s alleged action not only undermined the dignity and integrity of the electoral institution but also violated the penal and electoral laws, including the election Model Code of Conduct.
While condemning what it described as “unscrupulous voluntary act of the MLA,” the NPCC asked the SEC to investigate the matter and summon the MLA for questioning as per the procedure established by law and take necessary action.
Meanwhile, the NPCC Media Communications Department, in a press release termed the alleged act as “blatant abuse of power” by an elected representative.
