Conjunctivitis: Health official asks public to be vigilant and not panic

Dimapur | August 25

Amid the ongoing spread of conjunctivitis (eye flu) being reported across the state with Dimapur witnessing the majority of such cases, health officials have appraised citizens not to be startled by the sudden outbreak but to remain cautious of their surroundings and keep vigil of their personal health.

Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Dimapur, Dr Khreliesenuo viewed that the present weather conditions could be a factor as to why the state was experiencing a surge in the virulent flu. “The summer heat and constant rainy season seen in Dimapur are ideal conditions for such infections to spread,” she said.

Cases of the eye flu were first reported in the month of June and since then several districts have taken various measures to curb the spread. Recently the Deputy Commissioners of Niuland, Dimapur and Chümoukedima had ordered the temporary suspension of physical classes in schools from August 21 to 26.   This was followed by a similar actions being taken in Mon closing schools from August 22 to 26.

In regard to this, she maintained that although the flu was not susceptible to children alone but contagious for all ages, schools were the most common places where the rate of infection was higher given the large number of people congregating in a single space.

“That is why we had advised the district administration to temporarily suspend classes so as to contain the spread,” she reasoned.

In response to these closures, the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) had also allowed schools to reschedule the Class XII Mid-Term Examinations.

At the same time, the health official advised citizens to keep track of their health condition as they were still receiving daily reports of conjunctivitis cases coming to the district hospital. On an average, she reported that most of these cases had a recovery period of between one to two weeks depending on the severity of each case.
