A construction worker was reportedly shot at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) building site at Chiechama village in Kohima district on September 16, with police arresting a man in connection with the incident.
According to police sources, the FIR concerning the incident was filed at around 4:00 pm, with the shooting reported to have occurred at around 11 am. Police rushed the victim to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.
He sustained a single gunshot wound to his back and is currently out of danger, police sources added.
The victim was identified as Langshe Lomou from Chendang Saddle under Tuensang district.
The alleged accused, identified as Medochülie Zumvü, was arrested by police at around 5 pm on September 16. He was subsequently remanded to judicial custody and is currently lodged at the District Sub-Jail, the sources informed.
The weapon allegedly used in the incident has been identified as a country-made pistol, according to police sources.
Police are collecting evidence, while a full investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident is underway, the sources added.
Meanwhile, the Chiechama Village Council (CVC) has condemned the incident “in the strongest terms”, describing the alleged shooting as “barbaric and inhuman” and stating that such an act is “highly despicable” and should be condemned.
In a statement, the CVC identified Zumvü as a resident of Chiechama and alleged that he shot and grievously injured the victim, terming the incident unacceptable and calling for the matter to be dealt with seriously.
The council appreciated the police for “swiftly” taking the alleged accused into custody and stated that no village member should bail him out of police custody.
It also appealed to the State’s law-enforcement agencies to take all necessary measures to ensure justice for the victim. The council further wished speedy recovery to the victim.
