
Kohima, February 15 (MExN): Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Kohima along with District Health Society, Department of Health & Family Welfare, NRHM organised a consultative meeting of stakeholders under NIDDCP in collaboration with district review meeting and reorientation of leprosy to medical officers under National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) on February 11 at CMO office’s conference hall here. The program was chaired by CMO, Dr. Avino Metha, while PowerPoint presentation on NIDDCP & NLEP was given by Dr. Aseno. J. Rhetso, Zonal Leprosy Officer (ZLO).
Speaking on the subject, she informed that Iodine is a micronutrient essential for vital functions in the body. Daily iodine requirement of an adult is 150 microgram. Iodine deficiency results in Iodine Deficiency Disorder which includes mental retardation, stunted growth, low IQ level, abortion, still birth and goiter, she explained. She advised to store iodised salt in a closed container away from fire, and to add salt towards the end while cooking.
In her second presentation, ZLO informed that, leprosy is a communicable disease caused by bacteria affecting skin and nerves. It can be cured by early detection and treatment with Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) drugs. These drugs are available free of cost at Health Centres, she added.
