
Noklak, April 22 (MExN): A consumer awareness programme under the theme, “Consumer! Know your Rights” was held at White Hall in Noklak on Monday, aiming to empower citizens with knowledge on their rights and responsibilities as consumers.
The event was organised by the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Tuensang in collaboration with the Thang Students’ Union (TSU). It drew participation from civil society organizations, NGOs, church leaders, student leaders and students from eight schools across Noklak.
Khumeng T, General Secretar, TSU, chaired the programme. The invocation was delivered by Langshen K., Senior Pastor of the Baptist Church Thang.
In the welcome address, Thungiu Longshen, President, TSU emphasised the importance of awareness among consumers in remote districts like Noklak. “Knowing your rights is the first step toward safeguarding your interests,” he said.
C. Chullen Chang, Assistant Controller of the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, underlined the legal protections available to consumers and encouraged the youth to take an active role in reporting unfair practices. A brief address was also delivered by the President of the Thang Public Organisation, who urged community-based monitoring to ensure ethical business practices.
Herola, a panel lawyer with the Tuensang District Legal Services Authority, delivered the keynote address, focusing on the legal avenues available to consumers. “Awareness isn't just about knowing your rights — it’s about using them wisely and responsibly,” she noted.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Yemjong BN Chang, Inspector at the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection.
Session II addressed broader social issues under the topic “Child Marriage, Substance Abuse & Child Helpline 1098.” Speakers highlighted the legal consequences of child marriage and the rising concern over substance abuse among youth. The session also promoted Childline 1098 as a vital resource for children in distress.
