Consumer awareness programme held in Phek

PHEK, JUNE 17 (MExN): A Consumer Awareness Programme was conducted at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Phek, on June 14, with District and Sessions Judge and Chairperson of the Phek District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Mezivolu T. Therieh, as the guest speaker.

Addressing the gathering, Therieh highlighted the significance of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, a comprehensive legislation enacted to safeguard consumer rights and redress grievances effectively. She informed that the 2019 Act repeals and replaces the earlier Consumer Protection Act of 1986.

Emphasising key provisions of the Act, she pointed out the inclusion of new mechanisms such as dispute settlement, regulation of digital commerce, and stringent penalties for misleading advertisements. She also elaborated on the roles of the Central Consumer Protection Authority and mediation as tools to address unfair trade practices.

Therieh stated that under the new Act, consumers have the right to file complaints from their place of residence, including cases involving products purchased online.

Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (LM & CP), Phek, Sheikhozo Rhakho, in his keynote address, underlined the importance of consumer rights and ways to combat unfair trade practices. He encouraged consumers to be aware and proactive in addressing violations.

Additional Deputy Commissioner and Executive Officer, Phek Town Council, Thenakhrienuo Nisa, stressed the importance of ensuring quality in goods and services, and urged the business community to foster a consumer-friendly environment.

The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection and the District Legal Services Authority, Phek, in collaboration with the Phek Town Chakhesang Students’ Union (PTCSU).

The event was chaired by Vekuta Khamo, Vice President of the Chakhesang Town Chakhesang Students’ Union (CTCSU), while PTCSU President Vezovo Rhakho delivered the welcome address.
