Consumer orders health supplements, receives used clothes via post

Dimapur | July 27

A consumer in Dimapur, who placed an order for health supplements, was shocked to find used clothes in the parcel when it arrived. The incident happed at a sub post office in Dimapur on July 25.

The consumer, T Amenla Jamir said that she had placed the order on July 17 and the ordered items were shipped by India Post from Chennai. “I received a call from the post office on July 25 asking me to come and collect my parcel from the Nepali Gaon post office in Dimapur,” she said.

However, she said that she was shocked to find only used clothes in the parcel, which she opened in front of the post office staff. She added that she got suspicious after she found the parcel purportedly meant for her looked different from the one she was shown when it was shipped.

According to Jamir, the staff at the post office initially refused to let her open the package and asked her to sign the receipt paper and take it. She said that she insisted that the parcel was opened in the presence of the staff there, which she did.  Terming the staff’s reaction to the incident as rather casual, she said, “The staff told me that I was not the only customer to have had items lost or stolen during transit.”

While the staff insisted that she take custody of the parcel, she said that she refused and headed to the Postmaster’s office to file a complaint the next day.

Even at the Postmaster’s office, she said that her complaint was not taken seriously. “The official responded casually that ‘It happens’,” she said.

Nevertheless, she wrote a complaint letter on July 26 addressed to the Postal Superintendent, Kohima and submitted it at the Postmaster’s office to be forwarded to Kohima.

She recalled that it was the second time such an incident had happened to her. She said that she had written a formal complaint even in the first incident but nothing came of it.

The head office was still to respond to her complaint as on July 27, she added.

She said that she was contemplating filing a proper complaint in the Consumer Court.  Further, she had also gone to the West Police Station to file a complaint. “But I was directed to approach the Women Police Station” since the complainant was a woman, she said.  Postal service officials could not be reached for comment on the matter.
