Kohima, June 15 (MExN): The Consumer Protection Awareness Programme was held at Phek on June 14 last.

Guest speaker Mezivolu T Therieh, District & Session Judge spoke on Consumer Protection Act 2019 which replaced Consumer Protection Act 1986.

Therieh, who is also chairperson Phek District Legal Services Authority, emphasized that the law is enacted to protect the interest of the consumers and settlement of their disputes and the Act of 2019 has included digital commerce, strict penalties for misleading ads, mediation and Central Consumer Protection Authority to prevent unfair trade practices.

She urged that Town Council must act as facilitators and mediators and suggest for setting up redressal and mediation cells in resolving consumer disputes even before the complaint is brought before the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission. She mentioned that this can be done in partnership with the civil bodies.

However, while doing so, she cautioned that it is important to stay within the powers given and follow guidelines.

She highlighted that one important feature of the 2019 Act is that the consumer can file complaint from where he resides even if the product is purchased through online.

Delivering keynote address, Shiekhozo Rhakho Asst. Controller LM&CP, Phek  encouraged that the leaders must create awareness on quality products and services.

Thejakhrienuo Nisa, ADC Phek & Executive Officer, Phek Town Council, in her short speech mentioned that consumers are entitled to avail good quality products and services.

Interactive session was led by Sekhotso Rokha, Panel lawyer PDLSA.

Earlier, Vekuta Khamo, Vice President PTCSU chaired the programme while welcome address was delivered by Vezovo Rhakho. President PTCSU.

The programme was attended by members from Phek District Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Colony Ward Chairmen, Phek Town Youth Society, Phek Town Chakhesang Students Union, Ward Youth President and GBs.

The programme was organised by Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection and Phek District Legal Services Authority in collaboration with the Phek Town Chakhesang Students Union.
