Coordination meeting on human trafficking

Dimapur, August 29 (MExN): A coordination meeting on human trafficking was organized by Amrat Talitha Kum India, Hope Charitable Foundation (HCF), North-East India Regional Bishops’ Council Commission for Ecumenism (NEIRBC), Set Them Free (STF) - a network of likeminded individuals and organizations on anti human trafficking, on August 25.

The welcome address was given by Rev Abel Jacob the founder and director of HCF, a press release informed.

The moderator of the meeting was Sr Prema Chowallur SCC, vice president of Amrat Talitha Kum India. According to the release, Sr Annie Jesus FMM from Chattisgarh shared her long experience in working with Self Help Groups (SHGs) and the rescue of trafficked victims. "The women in Self Help Groups have been the backbone of our work to combat human trafficking," the release quoted her as saying.

Fr Martin Puthussery SJ who heads the office of labour and migration of ISI, Bangalore, shared his experience in working with migrants beginning from the year 2011 along with achievements and challenges. He narrated a few cases of death of the migrants and the sufferings of bonded labourers. "Our work can be successful only through the network and shared information," he said.

Other speakers during the programme included Sr Dhanam SCSC from Delhi, Fr Valaerian SJ, director of Purvanchal Pragati Samaj (PPS) from Guwahati, Fr Jaison Vadassery, Executive Secretary of Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and International Catholic Migrants Commission and Amrit Goldsmith, an honorary secretary of Assam Christian Forum (ACF). 

An ecumenical directory consisting of the details of organization and networks on migrant labourers and antihuman trafficking was suggested by the participants, the release stated.
