Cop kills cousin, surrenders to police

Our Correspondent Imphal | March 29   In a bizarre incident, a sub-inspector of Manipur Police allegedly shot and killed one of his cousins inside his car here on Tuesday following which he surrendered to police along with the body.   Laishram Birjit Singh killed Laishram Naopa, 28, with his service revolver in Mongshangei area in Imphal West around 1 pm, according to police sources. The 30-year-old accused Birjit is a newly appointed sub-inspector.   Birjit took away his cousin in his car from his residence around 11 am and killed him inside the car at the spot. Their houses located in a same plot at Kwakeithel Moirang Purel Laishram Leikai under Imphal West.   The reason behind the killing could not be confirmed yet. A case has been registered with Kakwa Police Station where the accused surrendered along with the body.   A mob attacked and partially damaged the house of the accused. The police managed to control the mob and prevented them from further attacking the house.     6 killed in Holi road mishaps   During the Holi in Manipur six persons, including two women, were killed and more than 80 people injured in different road accidents occurred in various parts of the state.   Imphal West Traffic Police collected nearly Rs 3 lakh from reckless drivers during the festival which is celebrated in Manipur for five days. Yaoshang or Holi is the biggest festival of the Meiteis, the major community of Manipur.   In a separate road mishap, a 23-year-old youth was knocked down by a speeding water tanker while saving the life of two young girls in Khabeisoi area of Imphal East yesterday.   Md Ajmir, 23, died on the spot saving the life of the two girls who were travelling on a Honda Activa scooter. Reports said the water tanker first hit a car then the scooter. Ajmir pushed the two girls into a drain nearby before he was mowed down by the vehicle.     Festival of Tribal & Media Folk Music   A two-day long Festival of Tribal & Media Folk Music began today at Iboyaima Shanglen in Palace Compound in Imphal East organised by Actors’ Repertory Theatre, Manipur. Folk music artists from different communities of Manipur such as Maring, Kabui, Liangmai, Kom, Meitei, Tarao, Kabui and Purul are taking part in the event which aimed at promoting interests and activities in the field.
