Imphal | June 4

The ongoing blockade along NH-2 in Kangpokpi district will be temporarily suspended for seven days starting from June 5, Committee of Tribal Unity (COTU) Kangpokpi announced through a press release on Sunday.

However, only essential commodities and medical supplies will be allowed to ply during the suspension of the blockade period with the escort of the central forces, the press release said.

The timing for movement of trucks shall be limited between 10 am to 2 pm only, it added.

The decision to suspend the blockade temporarily was taken by COTU after a wide consultation today with various civil society organisations, village chiefs, youth leaders and women's forums on several issues and as a goodwill gesture to the Union Home minister Amit Shah’s visit to Kangpokpi district, it further added.

The temporary lifting of the blockade is done wholly in support of the "Peace Mission" of the government of India to address the Kuki political issue, it also said.

“If attacks are carried out on Kuki villages by armed Meeteis during the suspension, the committee will be compelled to relook into the matter,” the press release issued by department of information and publicity of COTU warned.

The temporary suspension of the blockade came even as security advisor to Manipur chief minister, Kuldiep Singh reiterated the government's appeal to lift the blockade, in a statement today.
