KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 14 (MExN): The Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) has expressed strong opposition to the ‘Gau Dhwaj Sthapna Bharat Yatra.’
In a statement issued by its Vice President, Rev Dr N Paphino, the forum viewed the yatra (tour) as an attempt to impose foreign religious and cultural practices on the Naga people.
The NJCF welcomed visitors to experience the state’s distinct culture and Christian faith. However, the forum made it clear that any effort to introduce beliefs or practices that conflict with local customs and religious values would not be accepted.
To the Nagas, it said that the cow is a domestic animal and the promotion of the bovine as a sacred symbol was inimical to Naga culture or Christian beliefs.
In their statement, the NJCF warned against actions that could create divisions or confusion among the people of Nagaland, asserting that diversity should be respected, and no community’s worldview should be distorted. They vowed to oppose any efforts to introduce teachings or practices that they believe undermine the cultural, social and religious identity of the Nagas.
