Criteria for teachers’ appointment in GMS

Dimapur, July 7 (MExN): The Naga Students Federation (NSF) has written to the Additional Chief Secretary School Education appealing that the department put on hold all the ongoing appointment with regard to the newly upgraded Government Middle Schools (GMS). A representation signed by NSF President Mutsikhoyo Yhobu and Secretary Education Ahito Achumi informed that with regard to the 60 newly upgraded GMS, the department under funding from the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) had initiated for appointment of three graduate teachers each in every schools particularly, an Arts teacher, a Science teacher and a Mathematics teacher.

The NSF however expressed sadness that the department of school education had already decided to process for appointment of teachers in the schools without conducting any interviews thereby depriving the schools the benefit of qualified, loyal and capable teachers. While demanding that the ongoing appointments be put on hold, the NSF has set its criteria to the department. According to the NSF, preference should be given to the candidates who have professional degree; those who have experience either in private or government school. Likewise, preference should be given to local native candidates for those upgraded GMS which are in the villages. Further, the interview board should be constituted in such a way that one member be included from an apex civil society group/NGO.

The NSF has reminded that it will anticipate a positive action from the school education department and that “denial of opportunities in the above aspect will be read as an act of injustice for which the NSF will be compelled to define the cause in the most aggressively democratic manner”. It added that any “undue consequences as a result of championing justice will be answerable by the federation and further appealed to the Additional Chief Secretary for necessary action to the representation.
