Crop yield to be less than 50% this year

Kohima, September 17 (DIPR): A high-level meeting of the state government and the inter-ministerial central team was held on September 16 here at Hotel Japfü with regard to drought relief.

Officials from the Chief Minister’s office, Planning, Agriculture, Horticulture and others  attended. Nagaland Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Chumben Murry, who was also present, pointed out the implication of climate change which has resulted in deficiency of foodgrain production. The minister requested the central team to provide calamity relief to mitigate the difficult drought situation especially for the farming community.

He further informed the central team that many applications from affected farmers seeking drought relief  have  been received.

Giving a broad impression of the various drought-affected districts in the state that they had visited for assessment, the central team informed of their observations that deficiency of monsoon had adversely affected the crops substantially. They   confirmed that the yield will be less than 50% this time due to the shortfall in monsoon rains.

The team assured that the distress would be met with temporarily. With the projection of proper data, they would highlight  it to various ministries, the team said.
