CSDD refutes Naga Commission

Dimapur, July 28 (MExN): The Consumer Society Dimapur District (CSDD) has opposed the order issued by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur allowing the Naga Council Dimapur to collect taxes for the item coming to Dimapur town.

In regard to frequent price rise and the recent commission, the CSDD stated that it will burden to the consumers more and also the organisation have no right to collect such tax here.

Further, it said that allowing an NGO to collect tax will also encourage other NGOs to do the same which would ultimately create "chaotic economic disorder".

The tax termed as Naga Commission has been levied on certain items such as – round log, teak, fanta, bamboo, stone boulders, bricks, fruit items, cold drinks, vegetables, feeds, foreign goods/second hand, betel nuts, betel leaves, sand (Assam), MS rod, Cattle, Pigs, Goats, fowls, Fish, dry fish, eggs etc. the tax has been permitted “vide order No. PER-1/96-D/5802-08 dated Dimapur, the 13th July 2010”, stated the CSDD President T Hetoyi Yetho in a press release.

The note stated the commission has been kept in abeyance by the District Administration after the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce (DCC) lodged a protest.

“The abeyance order would not in any way serve the purpose but the original direction dated Dimapur, the 13th July, 2010 should be revoked immediately in the interest of the consumer rights & protect,” it added.

Moreover, it also said that the said direction is not only unconstitutional and violation of fundamental rights of the traders and consumers but also barrier to the free catering of the items mentioned.
