Dimapur, July 25 (MExN): The Chakhesang Students’ Union is for review of the reservation policy to serve the changing times.
The CSU in a representation addressed to the Chief Minister of Nagaland stated that the “infamous” roster policy for “backward tribes” August 18, 2001 had created serious imbalances for the BTs, while major tribes were victimized. The population ratio between the major and minor tribes at that point of time was “10:1” the CSU explained in the representation. “It was proven beyond doubt that greater equity in employment opportunities among backward tribes could not be achieved by mere share of quota per tribe; it has miserable failed to provide equal rights to all citizens of the state as per the provisions of the Constitution of India” stated CSU president Vevoyi D Vadeo and general secretary Khrope Tsuhah.
The CSU mentioned that the existing policy of 33% job reservation for 9 “backward tribes” of Nagaland has been “running” for the last more than three decades without any major review. This otherwise requires review at “the interval of 10 years to update in consonance with changes to fully realize the target.” The ideals of the policy are to help those tribes that are educationally and economically “very backward” and have insignificant representation in the government’s services, the CSU stated. This is to enable them to “come at par” with the “advance-tribes” the CSU explained. It is high time that the policy is redesigned and it needs a major review to do away with all ambiguities, the organization stated.
“The existing reservation policy have placed the Naga tribes in two simple categories, ‘advance and backward’ and there is no provision in the policy to further divide the tribes under the same category until such time the policy is (overhauled)” the CSU asserted and appealed to the CM to review the policy.
