Wokha, April 13 (MExN): One day training on ‘technique of oyster mushroom cultivation’ was held on April 11 at Yanpha village in Wokha district for women Self Help Groups (SHGs) by the Department of Agriculture, Wokha. It was organized with an aim to provide sustainable income for the families of the SHG members, said a press release from District Agriculture Officer, Wokha.
Rosemary Ezung, SDAO, Wokha, who was the resource person, stated that in rural areas, women play a pivotal role in economic sustainability by becoming self dependent and getting their children educated with their own money. It was mostly possible by working together as SHG, she stressed.
Rosemary also spoke as well as gave demonstration on how to cultivate oyster mushroom for nutritional support and income generation. Mushroom cultivation, she said, is suitable for Wokha climatic condition and easy to grow at home in a small space in a short duration.
Mushroom is a rich source of protein, iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, folic acid & vitamins and beneficial for health; it supports immune system, is anti-microbial, anti-viral, lowers blood sugar & pressure and highly in demand in the market for income generation in a sustainable way, she added.
Hands on practice of mushroom cultivation was also done by the participants.
Altogether, 20 SHG members from Jerry SHG, Yanpha village and Thenyata SHG, Liphanyan village and 3 officials attended the training, which was chaired by Longshithung Lotha, AI.
