Mon, March 29 (MExN): Wangkhao Government College (WCC), Mon, observed its Cultural Day 2026 on March 28, foregrounding the deep links between culture and environment under the theme “Environment as Cultural Heritage.”

In his welcome address, Honjem Konyak, Convenor of the Cultural Committee, highlighted the interconnectedness between environment and culture.

He noted that among the Nagas, the influence of the environment is reflected in various cultural expressions such as metalwork, stone sculpting, woodwork, songs, dances, storytelling, ornaments, and traditional attire.

He also pointed out that changing land-use patterns and developmental activities often have consequences on nature, urging sensitivity towards such issues while taking pride in indigenous cultural knowledge.

In her exhortation, Dr Esther P Konyak, Vice Principal, emphasised that the environment constitutes an intangible cultural heritage that is at risk of being forgotten.

Festivals, art, and music embody the relationship between people, the soil, and the seasons, she stressed.

A special number titled Watlong Shup was presented by the College Ensemble during the first session.

The second session featured a series of competitive events, including war cry, log drum beating, bead-making, folk fusion, bamboo pole climbing, and five stones.

The cultural day concluded with prize distribution, informed a press release from the WCC.
