Dimapur, May 8 (MExN): The persisting low pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea with associated cyclonic circulation is likely to bring heavy rains over Nagaland, North-East, East and other coastal regions of India during the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
In an update on Monday evening, the IMD informed that the cyclonic circulation christened ‘Cyclone Mocha’ is likely to intensify into a depression on May 9 over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea and further into a cyclonic storm the same region on May 10.
“Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts,” it said.
Consequently, on May 9, ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ is ‘very likely’ at isolated places over Nicobar Islands while heavy rainfall is ‘very likely’ at isolated places over Andaman Islands and Arunachal Pradesh, the national weather agency stated.
Additionally, thunderstorm with lightning was “very likely at isolated places” over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and Karnataka, it added.
On May 10, the IMD further forecasted similar weather condition.
However, no warning was issued for Nagaland on May 11 and 12.
Meanwhile, the IMD Regional Met Centre Guwahati on May 8 also issued ‘Yellow’ (Watch/Be Updated) alert for NE States during the next two days.
