
Newmai News Network Imphal | June 1 Cyclone Mora has claimed three lives in Manipur, according to Manipur State Government's Relief and Disaster Management department. One person identified as Aselo Wezah from Jessami of Ukhrul district was swept away by the swelling Thesii River while two children identified as Lianlunmang (about 4 years) and Kimngaisiam (about 3 years) drowned in Lanwa River in Churachandpur town today, the department of Disaster Management informed. The dead bodies have been retrieved in Churachandpur whereas in Jessami, the search for the body is ongoing. Meanwhile, the Government of Manipur has sanctioned Rs. 4 lakhs each as ex-gratia payment for victims of the calamity. Due to heavy incessant rains caused by Cyclone Mora in the last few days, almost all the districts in Manipur are witnessing flash floods, damages to river embankments, damages to lives and properties, agricultural lands, landslides, dwelling houses etc. All the Deputy Commissioners have been alerted and they along with all the government employees of various departments such as PWD, IFCD, PHED, Revenue, Health etc. are on the job for providing relief, repair and restoration works, medical facilities, food, drinking water etc. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Manipur has reviewed the situation and progress of relief and repair works with the Minister, IFCD, the Chief Secretary, the Principal Secretary (Relief & Disaster Management), the Commissioner, Works/CAF & PD, the Secretary, IFCD and the Deputy Commissioners today evening and directed to take necessary actions on war footing. The Deputy Commissioners have also been directed to make a brief preliminary assessments of the damages in their respective districts, so that, a preliminary proposal is submitted to the Central Government for providing additional financial assistance(AFA) to the State Government at the earliest. The detailed proposal along with full assessment will also be submitted to the Central Government accordingly later on. "The State Government is committed for the welfare of the people and District administration is working round the clock for providing relief and repair works so as to normalise the situation at the earliest," an official statement read. The statement further appealed the general public to be alert, take necessary precautions and help the Government machineries for restoring normalcy at the earliest.
