Cyclone Sitrang: Be prepared & vigilant, NSDMA directs DDMAs

Kohima, October 24 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department today directed all the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) and concerned department to be prepared and vigilant for any eventualities including disruption to normal services and activities in their respective districts and/or in their respective departmental area of concerns on account of the cyclone ‘Sitrang.

In another advisory related to the cyclonic storm issued on October 24, the NSDMA also advised all citizens of the state to take precautionary measures for personal safety. 

These included following traffic advisories issued, avoiding areas facing water logging problems/river front; avoiding staying in vulnerable structure/ landslide prone areas;  proper drainage in the cropped field if heavy rainfall is expected and updating regularly on weather forecast.

Any persons violating any order/direction under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, will be liable for action under relevant section of law, it said. 

The NSDMA’s advisory came amid the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and its Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati forecasting the continuation of ‘heavy rainfall’ activity over Nagaland during October 24-26.

The RMC on October 24 issued an ‘Impact Based Forecast for Nagaland’ as well as Special Weather Bulletin, dated 24.10.2022, concerning Heavy Rainfall activity during the period.

The IMD also forecasted of probable impact of the cyclone, which includes, poor visibility, traffic disruption due to water logging & uprooting of trees, landslides, flash floods, damage to power and communication lines, damage to standing crops etc, the NSDMA advisory added.
