PHEK, APRIL 17 (MExN): The Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) conducted a two-day area tour across Phek district on April 14 and 15 to promote awareness and strengthen enforcement of biodiversity conservation resolutions issued by the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO).
During the tour, CYF officials met with village and youth leaders to encourage the implementation of the CPO’s conservation policies and to understand the challenges faced by local communities. The visits are part of ongoing efforts to preserve biodiversity and enforce regulations within Chakhesang jurisdiction, a press release issued by Biodiversity Cell Incharge, CYF informed.
Key components of the CPO resolution include a ban on all forms of hunting, the use of harmful fishing equipment, extraction of medicinal plants, indiscriminate forest burning, and the import of pigs weighing over 30 kilograms. The use of borewells is also regulated, requiring prior permission from the CPO before drilling.
The CYF reported that five individuals were found in violation of these regulations during the tour and will be penalized according to the standing resolutions. The organization warned that repeat offenders would face stricter consequences.
Positive outcomes
According to the CYF, community-led conservation efforts have led to positive ecological outcomes, including an increase in bird and wildlife sightings. The organization emphasized the importance of continued local support in safeguarding the region’s biodiversity, noting Nagaland’s role as an ecological corridor linking Myanmar with other parts of the region.
The CYF also called on neighboring villages from other tribes bordering Chakhesang areas to respect the conservation rules and refrain from illegal hunting within Chakhesang territory. It cautioned that action would be taken against external offenders who violate these resolutions.
The CYF expressed appreciation for villages that are actively enforcing conservation measures and urged continued cooperation from all communities under the Chakhesang jurisdiction.
