CYF serves 2-week deadline in alleged molestation case

DIMAPUR, JUNE 21 (MExN): The Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) has submitted a representation to the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, seeking urgent action in connection with the alleged abduction and molestation of a woman on June 15 in a moving auto-rickshaw.

According to the representation, the incident occurred in an autorickshaw (registration NL-07FA-4980) reportedly driven by one Nur Islam. The CYF expressed grave concern over the rising incidents of crimes against women in the state and demanded a time-bound investigation to be completed within two weeks, failing which the organisation stated it would be compelled to explore other avenues of recourse.

The CYF stated that after meeting the injured and traumatised victim, it had grounds to believe that the case involves premeditated criminal intent. The victim reportedly informed that the driver deviated from the expected route at 4th Mile Junction towards Shouba without informing her. Furthermore, the co-passenger is said to have remained silent during the diversion, with no conversation between the driver and the co-passenger in the victim’s presence, raising suspicion of pre-planning between the accused parties.

The CYF urged authorities to treat the case not only under molestation and sexual assault charges, but also as abduction, kidnapping, assault causing injury, and attempt to rape and murder. It demanded that the driver be held complicit in the crime.

The youth body also called for an immediate ossification test to determine the exact age of the co-passenger, alleged to be a 17-year-old male. Citing the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, the CYF requested that if found to be within the 16–18 age range, the accused be tried under adult provisions, given the nature and gravity of the crime. It noted the confidence with which the juvenile allegedly committed the act as indicative of a societal threat.

On the circumstances of the incident, CYF stated that the assault took place on a Sunday afternoon and disputed earlier media claims regarding traffic or parked vehicles impeding the driver. The victim, a trained professional in the hospitality industry, reportedly suffered injuries, including facial scarring, while jumping from the moving vehicle to escape, after the driver allegedly ignored repeated pleas to stop. The CYF said the injury has had lasting physical and psychological impacts, including jeopardising the victim’s career prospects in the hospitality sector.

In this regard, CYF has demanded compensation under Section 357 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to facilitate plastic surgery or skill training, depending on the victim’s decision to either return to her profession or pursue an alternative livelihood.

The CYF urged the police to take proactive measures to ensure justice for the victim and reinforce public trust in the safety of women in the state.
