Kohima, March 21 (MExN): Dr. Kevichusa Medikhrü, Missions Director, National Health Mission, Nagaland launched DAKSHATA- an initiative of the Government of India to improve the quality of maternal and newborn care during the intra-and immediate postpartum period, through providers who are competent and confident (DAKSHATA), on March 20 at the Conference Hall, Directorate of Health & Family welfare, Nagaland.
In Nagaland, the initiative will be implemented in the Four High Priority District of Mon, Longleng, Tuensang and Kiphire initially followed by the other Districts in the coming years.
Addressing the representatives from the districts, Dr. Kevichusa appealed them that, DAKSHATA being an initiative in reducing the maternal and newborn mortality in the country, we should all take it forward in a serious note in the State. Dr. Bendangla, State Program Officer (RCH), Nagaland, gave a brief note the initiative and on how it will be implemented in the State. She said that, DAKSHATA is a pre-requisite to LaQshya which is to do with strengthening of labour room and DAKSHATA is to enable the service providers in giving high-quality services during childbirth in institutions and hospitals. The launching programme is followed by a 5 days sensitisation training of trainers from the districts. The training is organised in collaboration with Jhpiego, an international non-profit health organisation affiliated with John Hopkins University. The three member Jhpiego team is led by Dr. Rashmi Asif, Director, Clinical Services & Training and she is accompanied by Dr. Himanshu Sekhar Sahu, Senior Program Officer and Dr.Apoorv Jain, Program Officer.
A press note received here informed that this scheme aims to address the major drivers and determinants of the quality of care provided to the woman during the whole process of childbirth, from the time of her admission at the health facility, to the time of her discharge. Therefore, the focus is to ensure adherence to the highest impact clinical practices during the intra-and immediate postpartum period, with the labour room and the postpartum ward being the focal point of the intervention. The initiative is to build capacity of health providers to prevent and manage complications that are major causes of maternal and newborn mortality during and after childbirth.
