Darjeeling Himalayan Railway registers record earnings: NFR

Guwahati, January 23 (MExN): The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), a UNESCO Heritage site, earned the highest ever revenue of nearly Rs 17.3 crore as well as highest passenger footfalls during the current financial year till December 2023, an official release informed. 

Operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the highest ever revenue surpassing all the previous records was achieved because of introduction of more joyride services, it said. 

Huge footfall during this peak season of tourist flow in the section and growth in the passenger traffic led rise in the earning, it added. 

As per the release from the NFR CPRO, presently, daily service between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling and Joy Ride services are being operated between Darjeeling and Ghum in the DHR.

The DHR has also introduced special services like Steam Jungle Tea Safari, Red Panda, Him Kanya etc while some attractive services such as charter trains, special film shooting trains and heritage dining car are being offered in the DHR, it said. 

A new Coach Restaurant has been opened in Darjeeling and a Heritage Restaurant in Kurseong to attract more tourists in DHR, it added. 

The NFR also informed that several initiatives were undertaken for the promotion of DHR in the country and abroad and to boost the tourism, new coaches were introduced and new services were launched. 

The Darjeeling station is being upgraded with new features like heritage type windows, Kanchenjunga view point etc while upgradation of Ghum station is also under process, it added.
