Dimapur, October 22 (MExN): With the festive season right around the corner, the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) today appealed all concerned, especially the district administration and law and order enforcing agencies to set into motion mechanisms to ensure a safe, pleasant and peaceful environment in Dimapur in the coming days.
With the Hornbill Festival and the festive season around the bend, the State’s commercial hub Dimapur will, as usual, witness a flurry of activities and events, stated a press release issued the DCCI Presient Akashe Zhimomi
However, it noted that along with the activities, there are increases in - traffic snarls, congestion in markets and streets, crimes and petty thefts as well as rampant illegal taxation and donation drives.
Accordingly, the Chamber urged for setting into motion mechanisms to ensure a pleasant and peaceful environment.
The DCCI also suggested various measures to ensure such environment.
Among others, it urged the district administration led by the Deputy Commissioner not to authorise or give permission to any union/organisation to undertake donation drives.
Donation and fund drives like sales of calendar, lottery and sponsorship forced upon the business community by various unions and organisations to fund their winter conferences, events or jubilees have become a menace and a bane to society, it highlighted.
The DCCI also urged the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, to enhance security for the safety and security of both the business community and shoppers.
With the advent of the festive season, many unwanted elements like pickpockets, robbers, gamblers and drunk drivers pose grave threat to life and security of citizens, it said.
“So far, the police personnel, be it daytime or night, have been providing safety and security to the citizens of Dimapur,” it added.
While lauding the Dimapur Traffic Police for their untiring efforts in keeping the traffic flow bearable in the congested city, the DCCI also requested the Traffic Commissioner to deploy more tow-away trucks for vehicles violating traffic rules and to impose heavy penalties to violators.
The Chamber further advised shop owners not to park their vehicles in front of their respective shops so as to give easier access to customers to park for shopping, while further stating that ‘drop and pick-up vehicles for shop owners also ease traffic congestion to some extent.
With the surge in early shoppers/traders coming from other districts to shop or conduct business to avoid the rush in December, the DCCI also urged the shop owners and business houses to open their shutters on Sundays, at least until the festive season is over.
It also called upon the Dimapur Municipal Council or responsible authorities to evict/remove all footpath vendors in crowded streets and markets as they are “causing great inconvenience” to pedestrians, shoppers and shop owners due to congestions.
Further, selling or trading on drainage slabs is very unhygienic and vegetable wastes and other litters thrown into drains leads to foul smell and clogging of drains, it added.
The DCCI also conveyed Diwali greetings to one and all.
