DCCI to authorities: Curb extortion and limit union registrations

Dimapur, February 26 (MExN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has commended the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur “enforcing the directive of the Home department, dated May 19, 2022 to cease collection of illegal taxation on vehicles across the state by any entity or individuals.”

In a statement, the DCCI noted that despite “clear order” from the Home department, certain government departments blatantly flouted the directive and had to be reminded following an outcry from various organizations and the public, which was an “embarrassment for the state government.”

The DCCI maintained that the checking of commercial vehicles on national highways comes under the purview of the Home department’s order.

While acknowledging the continuous efforts of security personnel under the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, in combating crime, it pointed to a “sad reality” that residents continue to experience a rise in theft, arson and intimidation. “Particularly, the business community has been subjected to extortion, kidnapping, physical assault at gunpoint, being summoned etc in the past few months alone,” the DCCI stated.

The chamber appealed for more coordinated efforts and decisive action from the administration and security agencies to ensure swift measures to curb crime and anti-social activities.

It welcomed the recent survey for the installation of CCTVs at major intersections and markets, a joint initiative of the state government, the Police department and civil society organizations, stating that its implementation would go a long way in enhancing security and public safety in Dimapur.

The DCCI also urged the Dimapur District Planning & Development Board to refrain from recommending the registration of unions or business welfare associations, pertaining to business community, to the Home department. The chamber argued that Dimapur has been “overwhelmed” by unions and welfare associations, citing instances of three unions operating on the same street, armed with registration from the Home Department and recommended by the board. “Such overlapping of unions has led to a hostile and strained business environment,” the DCCI cautioned.
