DDLSA legal awareness prog

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 13 (MExN): Dimapur District Legal Service Authority (DDLSA) organized a legal awareness programme on Saturday, August 13 at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The interactive program today was aimed to generate awareness on legal rights while empowering the citizens with the knowledge of their legal rights and duties as enshrined in the constitution.
Some of the most prominent legal experts from the state presented papers on certain laws and Acts. The lectures focused on the nuances, their application in normal jurisprudence, in the process simplifying its understanding for even lay people.
The participants included the district Superintendent of Police, Z. Mero; the Deputy Commissioner N. Husheli Sema, law students, consumer rights group, civil society representatives, practicing lawyers, judges and magistrates themselves.
District & Session Judge, Dimapur S. Hukato Swu in his introductory note outlined the basic purpose of DDLSA. According to him the DDLSA is involved mostly in providing legal aid to people who cannot afford court fees and not well versed with their legal rights, and importantly creating legal awareness.
The subjects covered today ranged from Human rights, juvenile justice, domestic violence, motor accidents, consumer law, criminal procedure and RTI. Additional Solicitor General Akito Zhimomi spoke on ‘Law on Human Rights; Chief Judicial Magistrate-I N Suyie on ‘Law on Juvenile Justice’; advocates P. Pius Lotha, Imti Imsong, YI Singh and KL John covered ‘Law on Domestic Violence Act’, ‘Law on Motor Accident Claims’, Law on Criminal Procedure’ and Right To Information Act respectively. Principal of City Law College, Dimapur P. Leonard Aier covered ‘Law on Consumer’.
