Jalukie | January 27
THE ZELIANGRONG Baudi (Hoho) will be approaching the Government of Nagaland and in consultation with it, select a permanent site as headquarter for Peren District. This decision was taken and endorsed after the meeting held January 25 at Jalukie to evolve a consensus on selecting a site which however could not be reached due to conflicting interest.
‘There is too much conflicting interest and a consensus could not be arrived for the selection of Peren’s headquarter. We will be submitting to the Government of Nagaland and in consultation with the Zeliangrong Baudi a site will be chosen” Dennis Elung told The Morung Express. The modalities would be started soon, he added.
The Baudi had convened the general meeting with local leaders, village authorities and representatives encompassing different villages within Peren at the Town Hall, Jalukie to discuss the 2-year long pending issue.
Despite a lengthy deliberation on the pros and cons of the issue with different leaders raising hue and cry over some aspects of it, the meeting ended in a deadlock as a consensus on a particular site could not be reached.
With the meeting, previously touted to be the final occasion for a final decision ending in a deadlock the house unanimously endorsed the task of selecting the most suitable site (without any bias on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd sites preferences under discussion) to the Zeliangrong Baudi in conjunction/congruence with the Government’s decision on the feasibility and viability of the location which will be the most beneficial for the people of the area.
Denis Elung, President Zeliangrong Baudi, who chaired the meeting had said that “though there have been diverse opposition forces hindering the process of selecting a suitable site for Peren Dist. HQ., the organization has stood the test as being the chief agent of the peoples’ goodwill mission, and it held on to the decision of the people”. He further regretted the indifferent response of the Peren Lui Council and Peren V/C when they refused to entertain the peoples’ proposal to settle on Tebam Hegei Lulwa (New Peren and Kejanglwa) as the Dist. HQ. He called upon the people to make a wiser decision as it would determine the future of the younger generation. He also opined that the problems being faced today were because of the short-sightedness of past leaders and should never be repeated.
Meanwhile Lamhai Dungki, the second-preferred site proposed by the Peren Dist. Co-ordination and Facilitating Committee (PDCFC) failed to evoke a general mandate considering its location not being an epicenter of Peren’s populace, especially towards the Southern areas (Tening Area) which constitutes a majority of 54 villages out of the 90 plus villages under Peren District. Furthermore, the populace of Tening Area remained firmly in support of the Tebam Hegei Lulwa area (PDCFC’s first preference) and refused to accept any other 2nd/3rd site preferences other than this.
However they endorsed any decision if taken up by the Baudi in active consultation with the Government of Nagaland’s feasibility reports. Speaking at the meeting, Tarie, MLA 6 A/C Tening, said that huge amounts meant for infrastructural development of the district has not been utilized yet due to the dragging of the issue.
He viewed that the issue should be forwarded to the government to finalize the matter after due consultations with the Zeliangrong Baudi. In the meantime, leaders of Jalukie Pumling NKO also shared their magnanimous stance of offering lands to the government for any developmental activities as had been in the past, and maintained that it was willing to donate lands if required considering the present dilemma of the site selection issue.
