Death of sanity on social media

Dreamz Unlimited’s latest satire ‘bury’ some myths

Morung Express News

With the menace of fake news on social media often proving dangerous with many users gullible to one form of hoax or another, the Dreamz Unlimited has come out with a new video ‘honoring’ the death of sanity on social media.   The video, released on June 13, is sort of a homecoming for the Dimapur-based production house, doing what they do best – satirical commentary on prevailing issue in the society.

This time around, it is the phenomena of ‘fake news’ and hoaxes on social media. Titled “If Everything on the Internet was True,” the video has generated nearly 70,000 views on its YouTube channel in less than 24 hours.

Delivered in a typical deadpan humor and essayed by DU’s two most versatile performers and regulars - Ariensa Longchar (The boyfriend) and Imkongchuba Longchar (The friend), it opens with the two somber looking protagonists in a cemetery observing the death of former’s girlfriend.

“Your girlfriend was so fit and fine. How did it happen so suddenly?” queried his friend.

The reason? A viral message on WhatsApp.

“She got a message on WhatsApp. The message said, ‘Forward the message to ten people with two hours to receive good fortune. If you fail you will die’,” narrated the other.   Even though she tried her best, apparently she couldn’t share it with 10 people as the internet network broke down and hence the tragedy.

“As message said, right after 2 hours, she passed away,” gravely recounted the boyfriend.   Consoling the boyfriend, the other said that such messages should be taken “seriously” and “never ignored no matter what.”

“I never miss to forward such messages. Be it a message, video, or a picture. I kept it as my first priority. On Facebook, I’ve saved many lives just by typing AMEN. I have cured cancer, Ebola, dengue or measles,” he continued saying, “We must believe in those things wholeheartedly.”

The parody continued with the friend telling the boyfriend that he has a powerful message which could replace his dead girlfriend.

“If you forward it to ten people within 7 days, you will get a new girlfriend immediately.”

Just then the friend received a message informing that “Jackie Chan is dead.”   “I’ll forward it to as many people as I can,” he said.

A take on most common “celebrity death hoaxes.”

“He even died last month. I also forwarded it to everyone. This is the 5th time he is dying,” the boyfriend replied.

Just then another character arrived at the scene sipping a packaged fruit ‘juice’.

“Look at what he is drinking? Yesterday we have received a WhatsApp message warning us not to drink that juice because a worker from the company has added his blood contaminated with HIV (AIDS) virus...” the other two said.

“Yet this fool is drinking it,” they noted concurring, “That’s the result of not using the internet.”

Bang on target, before the video ends, the viewers are also urged to, “Share this video to 100 people and within 3 days, something GOOD will happen to you.”

AMEN to that.
