Dec 13 episode will haunt people of Nagaland: Therie

Dimapur, December 23 (MExN): Former NPF MLA K. Therie has pointed out that the memories of December 13 episode will haunt the people of Nagaland with a mixture of “joy and worry” in the coming Christmas and New Year. “While some expect justice, I understand Joy to the World is a difficult song at this moment”, Therie stated in a press note received here.

“Peace on earth, Joy to the world is the message from Emanuel.  Doing no wrong unto other people is what makes a good citizen. Helping and making others happy is the true Christian spirit. Accepting others’ wrongs with Patience, Tolerance and Silence is divine. The Lord has promised that Vengeance is His”, Therie stated adding that the “wrong doers will not go away from the World”.

Therie expressed that we are “all living in the glass house today” and that “no one can hide from the conscious police of the World”. “Justice will be done sooner or later. Definitely, the Honourable Speaker’s action is unconstitutional. No one can deny that 31 is greater than 23. This is common sense”.

Referring to Rule 19 of law of disqualification of Nagaland, Therie stated that this had been misused. On Rio's letter to the Governor on December 14, 2007, Therie took the position as expressed earlier by the Congress with regard to the conduct of the Nagaland Speaker and ridiculed by stating that “failing to understand such simple rule is unimaginable. It is only ill motive that has driven them to commit such heinous crime against democracy and in particular the people of Nagaland”.

Therie maintained that Rule 19 is for removal of doubt in regard to implementation of the rules, not removal of voting rights of the MLAs. “Refusing to count 12 MLAs’ votes with authority under rule 19 has no relevancy and is serious murder of parliamentary democracy. As is any murder, they are on the run for some time but they can never escape the truth. Justice will be certainly delivered and may be soon”, Therie stated.

“We are educated by the 13th Dec 2007 Episodes that we need to elect a Speaker who understands the basic principles of democracy and its values. We also are educated that we need to elect one who has the respect to human rights and the Constitution. We also are educated that Honourable MLAs represent people and that they are not only themselves. We also must elect one who has sense of doing justice in the larger interests of the people of the sate. Today 36 Assembly Constituencies are virtually in the opposition. Feeling comfortable with 24 A/C MLAs as the Chair of majority is the height of moral-less governance”, Therie remarked.

With regard to the political parties and individuals backing the DAN government at Delhi, Therie stated that they were doing so without knowing the episode of 13th December 2007 and pointed out that they have only “exposed their blanket ill-will for the majority people of Nagaland” and that they “cannot be taken seriously in any column for they cannot justify. Perhaps, it is because they are paid”.

Therie also stated that it was the common sense as also the supreme duty of democrat leaders to protect the fundamental rights of humankind. “Any law or rule or action that violates the rights of humankind is wrong. If anyone thinks that doing wrong to protect someone’s interest is right, the person can only be termed unsound and is unfit to occupy the Chair”, Therie stated.

Pointing to the old adage that “Government is by the people, for the people and of the people as Lincoln has described”, Therie pointed out that democracy was “not to be decided by one individual or by unsound minds”.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May the grace and wisdom of God lead the leaders of the people of Nagaland to secure peace and freedom of profession in the coming year.
